Concert with a Cause – Alumni Night at Symphony on the Prairie

The Swedish tribute band, Waterloo, returns to the Conner Prairie Amphitheatre for a concert of ABBA’s hits from the 1970s including “SOS,” “Dancing Queen” and “Mamma Mia,” among many others.  Waterloo, hailing from Stockholm in Sweden, is as close as you can get to the original act. Named for the song that won ABBA the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, rocketing the Scandinavian band to international fame, Waterloo has appeared in more than 25 countries including tours in the United States, Europe and Japan. ABBA, an acronym formed by the first letters of the first names of the four musicians-- Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad-- became the first pop group from a non-English speaking country to enjoy success on the record-sales charts throughout the English-speaking world from 1972 to 1982.  Join alumni from the Central Indiana Chapter of the IU Alumni Association for this annual Central Indiana tradition. Bring your favorite chair, picnic foods, and friends as we enjoy our annual night out to music under the stars. Tickets are $19 for adults who are members of the IU Alumni Association, $22 for nonmembers, and $12 for children (ages 2-11) when purchased by Aug 10. And again this year, if you donate $5 or more to the Diabetes Youth Foundation of Indiana (DYFI) for each symphony ticket purchased, you will receive VIP access to a wine tasting experience during the event. Tickets purchased by Aug. 10 will be mailed to the provided address.  Tickets purchased after the deadline will be available at Will Call at Conner Prairie. Concert happens rain or shine and will be postponed or canceled only in the event of severe weather. Alumni are encouraged to check the ISO website for weather and traffic issues before departing for the concert. Tickets for the concert and donations to the DYFI are nonrefundable, but purchased tickets can be used for any remaining 2014 concert.

  J-CLUB REUNION WEEKEND September 19-21, 2014

All former IUPUI student-athletes are invited to join fellow alumni for a weekend of family-friendly activities and adult fun in Indianapolis in September! The weekend will kick off with a 5K run on Friday evening at Michael A. Carroll Track and Field Stadium. This event is open to all.

A pancake breakfast will be available Saturday morning as part of the day’s IUPUI Regatta activities. Plan to have breakfast on the canal!

After breakfast, stick around for the Regatta. A full day of activities and events--including a family fun area, live bands, contests, games, food trucks, and much more--as well as the actual Regatta featuring 12 races of 8 canoes each with a second round of 3 championship races for all-male teams, all-female teams, and co-ed teams. If you would like to put a team together to participate in the Regatta itself, you can register beginning August 18. Registration is limited and fills quickly!

Saturday evening, you are invited to gather at the Severin Bar in the Omni Severin Hotel, located at Illinois and Georgia Streets in downtown Indianapolis. Enjoy beverages and food on your own as you catch up with old friends!

And on Sunday morning, the IUPUI Jaguar Sprint Triathlon will begin at 8:00 a.m. with a swim in the Natatorium pool, a bike ride up to the Velodrome, then back through campus, and a run through White River State Park. Following the Jag Tri, both the IUPUI men’s and women’s soccer teams will have games at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Attendance is free, so bring the whole family!

We hope you will consider participating in as many of these activities as fit your schedule. Your J-Club Board of Directors has worked hard to put together a meaningful weekend of activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Our keynote address will be actor Lea DeLaria. DeLaria is a comedian, actress, and jazz musician; DeLaria plays the role of “Big Boo” in Orange Is the New Black. She was the first openly gay comic to break the late-night talk-show barrier with her appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show in 1993. DeLaria has performed stand-up comedy for more than 25 years and is a prominent figure in the world of LGBT comedy. She began her career billing herself as "That [expletive] Dyke,” explaining that when she walked down the street, people would yell that at her.  DeLaria integrates musical performance into her stand-up comedy, focusing on traditional and modern be-bop jazz. In 2001 she released a CD of jazz standards called Play It Cool. This was followed by the album Double Standards in 2003 and by The Very Best of Lea DeLaria in 2008. DeLaria has appeared in a number of TV and film roles, including Edge of Seventeen, The First Wives Club, and One Life to Live. She has appeared in a number of on and off-Broadway shows, including: The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and On the Town. She currently plays Carrie “Big Boo” Black in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black.  For more information on this year’s keynote speaker, visit her website at www.delariadammit.com/.

The goal was to focus on one appealing topic which would allow the School to showcase faculty to alumni. In 2009, the alumni associations from other schools on the IUPUI campus decided to partner with Liberal Arts to open the event up to more alumni and showcase faculty from several schools on campus. The event is supported by the IU Alumni Association, the Purdue Alumni Association and the IUPUI Conference Fund.
