Informatics Names Hayes as Director of Strategic Planning and Research Initiatives
The IU School of Informatics has promoted Barbara M. Hayes to a newly created position, Director of Strategic Planning and Research Initiatives. A long-time member of the Informatics faculty on the IUPUI campus, Hayes will be responsible for short- and long-term planning and analysis relating to the School's strategic directions and general operation. A member of the School-wide and IUPUI Informatics Leadership Councils, Hayes provides liaison services to internal and external groups seeking various kinds of collaborative research projects.

Pair of Informatics Faculty Receive Grant From Computing Research Association
Two School of Informatics faculty members, assistant professors Kay Connelly and Kalpana Shankar, along with two undergraduate students, have received a $15,500 Multidisciplinary Research Opportunity for Women (MROW) grant from the Computing Research Association Committee on the Status of Women in Computing Research. Their proposal, “Using the Wii and Social Networking to promote Cognitive, Physical and Social Engagement among Seniors,” was selected from a wide variety of potential projects to receive the grant that the NSF has helped to fund. Over the next year, the foursome will investigate whether or not integrating a social networking component into the Wii gaming platform increases its user acceptance and social connectedness among elders. IUPUI Informatics Researcher Creates 3D Visualization for Life Sciences Startup
Wade Lange says he knew just the place to look for a creative solution to a complex marketing challenge facing his life sciences start-up firm – the IU School of Informatics at IUPUI. Lange is president and CEO of ImmuneWorks, Inc., an Indianapolis-based developer of new treatments for serious diseases of the lung. Leveraging recent discoveries made by IU School of Medicine researchers, ImmuneWorks is targeting Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a chronic lung disease that is often fatal. To explain ImmuneWorks' proposed medical treatment, Lange needed a computer animation that would visualize what IPF is, and how to attack the autoimmune disease. School Of Informatics at IUPUI Announces Three New Faculty Members
Three new scholars have joined the School of Informatics faculty, effective Aug. 1. The trio will teach classes and lead research in the areas of media arts and science, human computer interaction and health informatics.

Davide Bolchini, assistant professor, will join the faculty of Human-Computer Interaction. Bolchini received his Ph.D. in communication sciences, University of Lugano, TI, Switzerland (2003). Mark Pfaff, assistant professor, will join the faculty of Media Arts and Science. Pfaff received his Ph.D. from the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) at Pennsylvania State University (2008). Hadi Kharrazi, assistant professor, will join the faculty of Health Informatics. Dr. Hadi Kharrazi is an interdisciplinary medical informatics Ph.D. candidate between the faculty of Computer Sciences and the faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University, Canada. He holds an M.D from Iran University of Medical Sciences and Health Services. Read more»

Informatics Graduate Gains High Profile Among Global Web Development Community; Launches Software Development Company
For Sandosh Vasudevan, the word "leisure" doesn't necessarily compute. That's because Vasudevan – a native of India who came to IUPUI for graduate school – seemingly spends every waking moment developing software applications, projects that are turning heads in Silicon Valley and beyond. Last summer, Vasudevan, 25, completed an internship with Web portal giant Yahoo!, where he created a Web analytics extension to Firefox for use by the company's programmers and engineers. On weekends, Sandosh developed a movie selection widget for Yahoo! Widget Engine. It was judged a "must ship with widget," the top such ranking among Yahoo! intern projects.

Affecting Behavior: Roles of Affect in Interactions among Situated Embodied Agents - Indianapolis
Friday, Sept. 19, 10-11 a.m. Matthias Scheutz (who received degrees in philosophy, formal logic and computer engineering) presents an overview of the possible roles of affect in embodied agents that are situated in cooperative and competitive multi-agent environments. He will show that affective states can be useful roles both in deciding what to do next and in displaying agent-internal states that indicate the agent’s behavioral dispositions. Admission to this talk is free, open to everyone, and no RSVP is required. It will be held on the IUPUI campus, Informatics and Communications Technology Complex, 535 W. Michigan St., Indianapolis.

School of Informatics Beta House Opening - Bloomington
Friday, Sept. 19, 4-6:30 p.m. Beta House is located at 919 E. 10th St. in Bloomington. There will be free food, live music, games, faculty and student exhibits, as well as building tours. The Student Alumni Association will provide corn hole and act as student hosts. This event is open to everyone, and no RSVP is required, so mark your calendars!

School of Informatics Alumni Association Hoosier Village Tailgate - Bloomington, IU vs. Ball State
Saturday, Sept. 20, 5-7 p.m. Hoosier Village is located behind the DeVault Alumni Center, directly across from Assembly Hall and Memorial Stadium at 1000 E. 17th St. in Bloomington. There will be special seating for Informatics alumni, live music, merchandise, games, your favorite tailgate food, a cash bar provided by Upland Brewery, and plenty of Hoosier spirit! Tailgate cost is $15 per person (IU Alumni Association members), $20 per person (nonmembers), and $10 for kids ages 12 and under. Game tickets (group discount) are $23 for Hoosier Village attendees. RSVP by Wednesday, Sept. 10 to Kathleen Surfus at ksurfus@indiana.edu, (812) 855-3768 or (800) 824-3044. Please indicate the number of people attending Hoosier Village and the number of game tickets needed. Tickets will be held under your name at the main entrance to Hoosier Village.

Alumna Success Story, Jennette Fulda (BS '03)
Jennette Fulda, Class of 2003, has recently published a book chronicling her incredible weight loss. Her memoir recounts her adventures losing over half her body weight without losing her sense of humor. Jennette tracked her 200+ weight-loss progress on her popular blog, "Half of Me," which features 3D rotating progress photos she built using the skills she learned earning her degree in Media Arts and Science. The attention and acclaim Jennette earned on her blog helped her land a book deal. Read more»
