Staying with the Ryans was great! They opened up their home to me, gave me directions, showed me the area, and made me feel like a part of their family. It was much more enjoyable to stay with people connected to the school where I was interviewing than to just jet in and out and stay in an impersonal hotel room. I was also able to get information about Duke and specifically about the internal medicine residency from Dr. Ryan. I am very grateful to have had this opportunity. In the event that I do match at Duke, it will be nice to already have contacts and friends in the area.

Dr. Kappes was very hospitable in Milwaukee. When I arrived, Dr. Kappes was home and greeted me warmly and we had a good conversation about both Indy and Milwaukee. He was very attentive in making sure that I could find the campus and hospitals where I was interviewing. I did not have dinner with the family because of a reception, but I did join them for breakfast. They also took me on a short driving tour of the city, which was very nice.

Dr. Zusan is a recent graduate doing surgery in Cincinnati (PGY-2). She was absolutely lovely, as was her husband. I was coming into town before she was going to be home, so she left a key where I could find it and I let myself in. I had a reception that night, so I did not have dinner with them, but before and after the reception they were very welcoming and told me all about what they knew about the area, the medical center, and housing opportunities. She seemed to be close enough to the whole process that she anticipated my needs, and my stay was very comfortable.

I greatly enjoyed the experience. My host prepared a wonderful dinner and provided great conversation that eased nerves the night before interviews. He also golfed with the chairman of the department earlier that day, which ended up being a great conversation starter during interviews. The program saves money and provides a clean and warm environment to relax in before a stressful interview day.

I enjoyed talking with a physician in the local community and getting his perspective on the program, as well as of the city. They were generous in terms of transportation and gave me a car to drive on my interview day. It was also nice not to have to spend a hundred bucks on a hotel stay!

As opposed to staying alone in a hotel, I was able to interact with a family from the area. Not only did they provide food and comfortable lodging, but the wife took me on a tour of the campus and local community, providing information and insight I would have otherwise not received.
